Apples & Blackberries
Back to News 05 July 2014 by Kela Hodgins in Gardening
Although we’re still a couple of weeks away from peak harvest, the orchard is showing signs of a bumper crop of apples owing to the gorgeous summer weather. We have over 12 trees in the 1 acre walled garden, with cookers and eaters in abundance. Some of the trees are pretty ancient varieties with a taste and colour just miles away from the imported trays you find on the supermarket shelves.
I’ve used some early windfalls to make delicious apple tarts, blackberry and apple crumbles and an apple & almond cake. The new apple press is on the way any day now so we’re definitely looking forward to some homemade juice and cider. Hoping to rope in some neighbours to help, payment in Dunowen House cider!!
Will keep you posted………
